Whenever we are tasked with creating a Scottish Highlands itinerary for a client, we most often start with Royal Deeside as the opening destination. We find that this area is a great way to show an introduction to what the Highlands represents; small quaint villages & towns, beautiful scenery and this enchanting atmosphere.
The area was made iconic by Queen Victoria who back in 1848, alongside her husband Prince Albert holidayed at the Balmoral Estate. She instantly fell in love with Deeside and subsequently brought the Balmoral Estate. With this the area was renamed to Royal Deeside as we know it.
Staying in Royal Deeside is such an experience, the tranquility, the Royal connections with Balmoral and Scottish culture make it a lovely place to visit.
You can take in the village of Braemar with it’s traditional independent shops, you can walk along the trails, you can see the castle, visit Balmoral, enjoy country pursuits and much more. The town of Ballater is nearby which is a very Royal town. Here you will find that truly Royal element with the local HM Sheridans butchers, Royally approved, that sells a selection of local produce, the Art gallery that features some very talented Scottish artists and some fantastic eateries.
The hotel we suggest to stay at during your visit here is the Fife Arms, this a luxurious accommodation that has most recently been awarded the prestigious 2 Michelin Keys. It has all the trappings of a traditional Scottish country hotel with it’s decor, fittings and staff with many from the locality. However it is also that little quirky. There is around 16000 artworks, artefacts that adorn the walls of the hotel that certainly add intrigue and interest.
Royal Deeside a wonderful location, waiting to be explored…
